Coffs welcomes Queenslanders with new Qantas flights from Brisbane

Coffs Harbour Airport today welcomes the second of two new flight routes operated by Qantas into the region with its Brisbane service.

The new service will connect locals to Queensland’s capital as the second airline to operate the route into Coffs Harbour Airport.

Commencing just in time for the Labour Day (QLD) public holiday, this service will be operated by a turboprop Q400 aircraft four times a week providing over 31,000 seats between the destinations per year.

“These direct flights to Coffs Harbour will help support the growing demand for domestic travel and have flow on benefits for local businesses looking to recover from the impact of COVID-19” says QantasLink CEO John Gissing.

“We want to encourage travellers to holiday around Australia and with these new flights, we’re now offering more seats into Coffs Harbour than before COVID-19.

“The new route to Brisbane means we now offer direct flights from Coffs Harbour to three east coast capital cities, making it easier for residents to travel for business and visit family and friends.”

Incoming Coffs Harbour Airport General Manager, Frank Mondello, said the new service provided a fantastic opportunity for local tourism operators in the wider region.

“Connecting the capital of Queensland to a premier holiday destination in the Coffs Coast, and surrounding Clarence, Bellingen and Nambucca Shires will add a much-needed tourism boost to the economy.

“Not appealing just to holiday makers, this route offered by Qantas will attract business travel as passengers can opt for a 60-minute flight in lieu of the drive along the Pacific Highway.

“We also know plenty of Coffs locals have family and friends up in Brisbane, and what better way than to be from your home into Queensland’s capital within an hour.”

Leading up to the acquisition of a long-term lease of Coffs Harbour Airport by Palisade Investment Group, Mr. Mondello was optimistic about the economic recovery of the region.

“Having these direct flights will not only pave the way for a strong tourism recovery after COVID-19, but will further strengthen the region’s business links.”

Coffs Harbour Mayor Councillor Denise Knight said she was delighted to see Qantas commence on the Brisbane route.

“Once again Coffs Harbour Airport is able to offer passengers more choice with a second airline servicing Brisbane. South East Queensland is an important market for the Coffs Coast tourism industry so having competition for the hour-long flight between Coffs Harbour and Brisbane will provide another – very welcome – boost to our local economy and broader community.”

Random passengers on the first flight were also surprised with a ‘lucky luggage’ initiative thanks to Coffs Coast. Purchased from businesses directly, passengers on the plane were treated to $50 vouchers to The Big Banana Fun Park, Dolphin Marine Conservation Park, Coffs Harbour Butterfly House, Surf Club Bar & Restaurant, Montem Bike Tours, Element Bar & C-Change Adventures.

February 2021:

Qantas will launch direct flights to Coffs Harbour from Melbourne and Brisbane as well as increase the aircraft size on one of its daily Sydney services from 1 April, just in time for the Easter holidays.

The major capacity boost coincides with the expected start of the lease of Coffs Harbour Airport from Coffs Harbour Council to Palisade Investment Partners.

The services include:

 Up to seven weekly services between Coffs Harbour and Melbourne, operated by a 110 seat Boeing 717;

 Four weekly services between Coffs Harbour and Brisbane, operated by a 74 seat Dash 8 Q400; and

 The larger 110 seat Boeing 717 aircraft being deployed between Coffs Harbour and Sydney at least seven times a week.

The major capacity boost will deliver around 2,600 additional seats for the region every week, or 135,000 seats a year.

QantasLink CEO John Gissing said these new routes would provide Australians with more options to plan their next holiday in their own backyard.

“With international borders closed, we want to make it even easier for travellers to holiday around Australia,” said Mr Gissing.

“The beautiful coastal hub of Coffs Harbour continues to be incredibly popular with travellers, so it makes sense to provide direct connections from other capital cities to make it even more accessible.

“These new flights are good news for local businesses, hospitality and tour operators, helping drive tourism and reviving the industry that has been hurting from COVID-19.”

Coffs Harbour Mayor Denise Knight said the Qantas announcement was a great signal for the future of Coffs Harbour Airport.

“This is an incredibly auspicious start to our partnership with Palisade Investment Partners and it’s great to see we’re getting runs on the board so quickly,” Ms Knight said.

“Having regular flights to Melbourne restored and increased services on both the Sydney and Brisbane routes is going to provide a fantastic opportunity to boost tourism and the broader economy of the region.

“It’s fabulous news for the Coffs Harbour community and the entire Coffs Coast.”

CEO of the management company that will oversee Coffs Harbour Airport, Andrew Brodie, said his team was delighted to work with Qantas and Coffs Harbour City Council to secure additional flights in the lead up to the lease of the Airport to Palisade Investment Partners.

“We are passionate about the role Coffs Harbour Airport will play in helping the region reach its potential as a vibrant hub by building connections and supporting growth,” Mr Brodie said.

“Direct services to Melbourne is a massive coup for the Coffs community, with Qantas now giving direct access to three fantastic state capital cities, supporting a growing business travel market and providing important links to family and friends.

“It is also a fantastic opportunity for the local tourism industry to target new and growing markets, with these services set to deliver high value visitors to the Coffs Coast region eager to explore the beautiful beaches, stunning national parks and relaxed coastal towns.”

Qantas is offering a $129 one way launch sale fare to Brisbane and Melbourne, for periods of travel between April and October.
